Windows 7 - IE 8  - Self Signed Security Certificate - IP for the URL
I have a server in house that has a self-signed certificate used with SSL on top of IIS. My pc runs windows 7 64 bit and IE 8. When I type in the address of the server from the pc IE 8 browser as in https://192.168.25.100 IE explodes with certificate error messages. I have searched the web including the solution of loading the cert in the the local computer physical store of the trusted certificates when the site is not a trusted site and every permutation within. Still IE shows that there is a certificate problem. What is worse is when I ask the web server to serve a file to my desktop, IE says the file is not available because the certificates don't match. Is this a problem with IE8, because IE7 was just fine as is Firefox - all version. Your help greatly appreciatedl PS posted in this forum because there is no Windows 7 IE forum only a Vista IE forum.

Um, this issue is primarily IE 8 related. Not IIS. IIS is secondary. IE 8 is primary. Please direct me to the most appropriate IE8 forum - not Vista, either XP, XP64 or Windows 7. I tried this: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/681695/what-do-i-need-to-do-to-get-ie8-to-accept-a-self-signed-certificate but since I use a numeric IP rather than a domain name, IE8 fails. see this answer: 3 down vote Make sure that your self-signed certificate matches your site url. If it does not, you will continue to get a certificate error even after explicitly trusting the certificate in IE8 (don't have IE 7, but firefox will trust the cert regardless of a url mismatch). If this is the problem, the red "Certificate Error" box in IE8 will show "Mismatched Address" as the error after you add your cert. Also, "View Certificates" has an Issued to: label which shows what url the cert is valid against. link | edit | flag answered Jul 17 '09 at 21:02 Gabe Moothart 4,416 1 5 18 No problems like this in IE 7 or Firefox. See this link: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/1042035/ie8-will-not-install-ssl-certificate See this answer: Make sure your cert's CommonName matches the domain name . For example, if you website will be accessed at 'https://www.example.com', CommonName should be 'www.example.com'. If this doesn't match, nothing you do in the second and third step will matter. Run IE8 in administrator mode and navigate to your HTTPS URL. Continue beyond warning, then view the site's cert to access the 'Install Certificate' button. Add the cert to Trusted Root CA Certificates . Restart IE8 in protected mode then navigate to your HTTPS URL again. All warnings should be gone. How do we get around this? Thank you for your kind attention!

Hi, First, I would like to say that we have the IE forum for IE issue. I also would like to know the detailed certificate error message which you received. This issue can be caused by the Root Cert missing in trusted root store of client machine. You can open it from Internet explorer which will display the certificate. Click on the button Install Certificate to launch the Certificate Installation wizard. If it cannot be fixed, please take the following steps to deploy root cert via GP: 1.Open Group Policy Management Console. 2.Find an existing or create a new GPO to contain the certificate settings. Ensure that the GPO is associated with the domain, site, or organizational unit whose users you want affected by the policy. 3.Right-click the GPO, and then select Edit. Group Policy Management Editor opens, and displays the current contents of the policy object. 4.In the navigation pane, open Computer Configuration\Windows Settings\Security Settings\Public Key Policies\Trusted Publishers. 5.Click the Action menu, and then click Import. 6.Follow the instructions in the Certificate Import Wizard to find and import the certificate. 7.If the certificate is self-signed, and cannot be traced back to a certificate that is in the Trusted Root Certification Authorities certificate store, then you must also copy the certificate to that store. In the navigation pane, click Trusted Root Certification Authorities, and then repeat steps 5 and 6 to install a copy of the certificate to that store.
